PORTRAIT /
Friedrich Christian Flick - Art Collector and Businessman
Friedrich Christian Flick was born on 19 September 1944 in Sulzbach-Rosenberg (Upper Palatinate) to Otto-Ernst Flick and his wife Barbara. His grandfather was Friedrich Flick, founder of the Flick Group. After the completion of his primary and lower secondary schooling in Starnberg, the family moved to Düsseldorf, where Friedrich Christian Flick took his Abitur at the Comenius Gymnasium. It was at this point in time that he first came into contact with contemporary art, which, owing to the presence of Richter, Polke, Lüpertz and Uecker, was eminently represented in Düsseldorf.
Although even in those days he was fascinated by the art world, he initially devoted himself to a career in business, completing internships at various banks in the United States before finishing his law degree in Munich, his doctorate in Hamburg, and going on to work for the light bulb company Osram. In 1972 FCF became a partner in Friedrich Flick’s limited partnership company, where he assumed a managerial role. In 1975, however, he withdrew his involvement and, following sojourns in the USA and England, moved to Switzerland, where he has been active as a businessman and art collector ever since.
